Hi all,

I have some questions regarding about using this word 'want' to construct sentence.

Please check if I'm correct for this one- vouloir:

  • Je veux
  • Tu veux (fml)
  • Il veut
  • Elle veut
  • Nous voulons
  • Vous voulez
  • Ils veulent
  • Elles veulent

I found a sentence which i need some help.

In english the sentence is: he wanted to wait. in french the line is as: Il voulait partir

Why is the sentence not construct as  'Il veut partir'

Another sentence in English: I didn't want to buy ut. In french the line is: Je ne voulais pas l'acheter

Why is the sentence not construct as  'Je ne veux pas l'acheter'

Thanks for reading my post :)

In your first sentence "he wanted" is  the 3rd person singular of the past  tense of the verb "to want"

In your second sentence "I didn't want" is  ,similarly, the first person singular of the past tense of the verb "to want"

In order to translate the sentence into French  you will have to use a construction from the past tense of vouloir (=to want)

It goes like this

  • Je voulais
  • Tu  voulais (fml)
  • Il  voulait
  • Elle  voulait
  • Nous voulions
  • Vous vouliez
  • Ils  voulaient
  • Elles veulaient

                                   Hope that helps!

It reallys help alot...

thanks for the sharing :)

In english the sentence is: he wanted to wait. in french the line is as: Il voulait partir

We write 'English' not 'english'. Not 'french' but 'French'.

In English the sentence is: he wanted to wait. in French the line is as: Il voulait partir
