Donc, avant la ponctuation.

In cases like this, stand back and think: what do you actually mean by "the correct rules"?

- if you're writing for a particular publication/university etc, then the "correct rules" are whatever it says in that publication's style guide (or the one they choose to adopt)-- so just do whatever that style guide tells you to do;

- otherwise, there are no "correct rules". Do what you think looks best and/or is most logical in the particular situation in question.
