Is that a valid answer? I substituted 'le journal' with 'le' and 'dans le metro' with 'y'...

Almost!

Clitics (that's the technical name for these little words like "le", "y") are odd in that when two or more occur together, speakers genearlly put them in a particular order.

It turns out that y genearlly comes after other clitics (except en). So you'd actually end up with:

Je ne l'y lis pas.
