the book i've put myself to translate, written in 1943, conjugates verbs in a way i can't find in the dictionary; for example, "creusea", "dirigea", "sembla";

what tense should these be translated into, in english?

tia

isabelle

The tense is usually called "passé simple": it's a simple past tense, traditionally used in past-tense narratives. Usually, a simple past tense will do in English ("dug", "led", "seemed" etc).
It's a section that will be expanded over time, but I've put up some very basic information on the past historic in the grammar section for those interested.
