hi, what do you mean by "vis-à-vis"? beside? towards? in relation to?
I was going for something like "in relation to".
Is there a more appropriate term that you know of?
ok, so it is not "voir" but "regarder"
J'ai toujours aimé cette église, mais je ne l'avais jamais regardée dans son contexte avec la ville environnante.

Don't forget the agreement between the past participle and the complement when it is before the verb, here the complement is l' for église, église is feminine and before the verb so "vu" or regardé" need a final "e"

If you want to speak with french people, i think you should say :
'J'ai toujours aimé cette église, mais je ne l'avais jamais vu dans son environnement citadin'

It's just a supposition...
