"I am looking forward to" "I am very excited about"
Can anyone give suggestions for these phrases in French? Is "J'ai hate d'etre parmi vous" (sorry - no accents...) common or a little over the top. I just want to say to a friend that I am looking forward to seeing her at the weekend and excited aboutbeing able to be at her wedding.

There are a number of expressions to translate "looking forward to" -- I think the one you suggest is fine. Other possibilities: "Je me réjouis à l'avance de...", "j'attends avec impatience de...", even just "Je suis impatient(e) de...".
I would actually say these are more like the equivalent of "I'm really looking forward to...", i.e. when you actually mean it.
It's common in English to use "I'm looking forward to..." as a kind of "throwaway" comment at the end of a letter. And in that case, I think it would be more common in French to just write e.g. "En attendant le plaisir de te voir..." or something of that ilk.
