I've seen both in different dictionaries.  What is commonly used?

Faire du jardinage - when you discuss about your hobbies 

Que fais tu le week end ? Je fais du jardinage

Faire du jardin - we could use it as well in the same meaning than above but it's barely used but

Faire LE jardin - is most commonly used to tell people that you did it : 

Samedi après midi, j'ai fait le jardin ou j'ai fait du jardinage

Je suis en retard, je n'aurais pas le temps de faire le jardin ce soir, j'ai pourtant des patates à planter et des radis à semer

you could say as well

Je suis en retard, je n'aurais pas le temps de faire du jardinage ce soir, ......

I would have said "faire le jardin" . I haven't come across " faire du jardin" .
