Hi,

I'm looking to name a medieval village house that has lovely views over a river / weir beneath the village ramparts into which the house is built. I want the name to describe, "view over the waters" or "river view" or "stunning river view" in the most colloqiual French way.

Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Hi Andrew,

Is it a long river or a small one?

If it's a small one, you could say Vue sur un cours d'eau. Or if you want to sound cozy, Vue sur la rivierette.

If it's a larger one, Vue sur le fleuve

Or it you don't know Vue sur la rivière

If you want to add "stunning", prepend "superbe".
Hi Frank,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. To answer your question about the water.....

it's basically a large pool of calm water where two small rivers have joined above a weir.

Does this prompt any further ideas / suggestions? :)

Cheers,

Andrew
A bit longer, but more accurate:

Superbe point de vue sur la jonction de deux rivières.
Mmmmmm... a bit long for the name of a house :)

What would be the translation for "pool" is this context?
What would be the translation for "pool" is this context?

"étang" or "bassin".

Another suggestion: Au pied des eaux. Sounds cool for the name of a house.
Another suggestion, that is guaranteed to sound hilarious to native speakers (it's a pun) :
Des gars, des eaux

By far my favorite one.

It means "Guys and waters". This is the obvious meaning, and the only possible meaning with this spelling.

But it also phonetically sounds like "dégât des eaux" which means water damage :)
Would "Belle Vue des Eaux" make good French for this?
Or would "La Belle Vue des Eaux" with the definite article make a more correct sounding house name?
Yes, "belle vue des eaux" is okay, but "belle vue sur les eaux" would be more correct.
