hi can anyone help make sense of this please
quand l'alouette a succédé au rossignol
broyer le visage des affligés

I get the words yet it doesn't seem to make any sense.

Jemma -- in cases like this (and indeed, with translation tasks generally) it helps if you can provide as much context as possible. Where did you see the sentences? Is it part of a poem? What other sentences come before and after them...?
Hi Jemma . It sounds like a poem and it seems to be a poetic allusion to daylight (lark is a morning bird and nightingale sings in the evening) hurting (crushing) the faces of the afflicted. Broyer les couleurs means to dis-colour and so it could also mean that the daylight discolours or fades the pain on the face of the afflicted.
