tendue pour que – what does it mean?!

I am trying to translate the following phrase: 

"Nous devons tous un jour rejoinder le Seigneur, et toute notre vie est tendue pour que nous puissons le rejoinder dans la joie."

However, I am stuck on the verb tendre in this context, particularly with the rich religious idiom expressed. 

Can anyone help, and perhaps offer an idiomatic translation?

"être tendu" used this way means being nervous, vulnerable. Hope it helped you!

I think here the sense is a bit different-- the idea is more like "our life is aimed towards being able to...", "throughout our lives we strive towards...". It's not a very common use of tendre, but I think that's the idea.
