"par la force"

The dictionary has this as "using force" and yet it also has the sentence: 

Ils lui ont enlevé son pistolet de force. They took the gun from him by force.  

I would think the above sentence would have used "par la force."  I would like to see when to use "par la force" rather than "de force."
