as is often the case, I know the meaning of all the words, but not always the sense. I've just received an e-mail from a friend in France whose granddaughter is very ill, and she uses the phrase 'ses yeux et son coté droite sont atteints.' Could you help with an exact translation please; the 'atteints' is giving me problems.

Here, atteints means "affected", "injured", "afflicted". So effectively, they're saying that the granddaughter's eyes and right side are affected by the illness.
