I bought a sweater pattern when in Paris a couple of weeks ago, and understand most of the instructions, but need help with a couple of words & phrases.

 

phrase:  "tricoter au point mousse en augmentant 1 maille de chaque cote' tous les 2 rangs" ...

My English:  "knit ________ and increase 1 stitch every ________ every 2 rows ... "

 

phrase:  "Tricoter droit pendant 40 rangs (on doit avoir 43 cm) puis former l'emmanchure comme suit au rang suivant:

My English:  "Knit ______________ 40 rows (or measures 43 cm) __________ to make armhole _________ the following row:

 

wordrabattre                      English: _____________

 

phrase: du meme cote'           My English: on the same side  (?)

 

phrase:  "Pour augmenter les mailles, il faut les monter souplement comme lorsque vous debutez un tricot ..."

My English:  "To increase stitches, __________________________ you start knitting"

 

phrase:  "de l'autre cotes c'est-a-dire la partie la plus large"

English:  ________________________________________

 

phrase: "Diminuer du cote' du poignet (partie la plus petite) tous les 2 rangs 7 fois 11 mailles en les rabattant souplement."

My English: "Decrease ______________________________ every 2 rows 7 times 11 stitches _______________________."

Well, this is the first time I've faced a knitting translation.

 

Inspection of the Frencg wikipedia page...

...is instructive. Point mousse seems to be garter stitch.

When increasing, cast your stitches on loosely just as when you start a knitting job...

 

That's about all I can safely do.


tricoter au point mousse en augmentant 1 maille de chaque cote' tous les 2 rangs.

 

Garter-stitch, increasing one stitch each side every second row. 

 

rabattre normally means fold back. It may have a technical meaning in context.

I just discovered that rabattre in knitting means to cast off. I can't quite grasp the sense of souplement. It means something like deftly, and can be ignored.

OK, how about this..

 

Diminuer du cote' du poignet (partie la plus petite) tous les 2 rangs 7 fois 11 mailles en les rabattant souplement.

 

Decrease on the wrist side (smaller part) every second row seven times 11 stitches, casting off loosely.
