Hi, Le Figaro had this in an 'Alerte' this AM:
"Dominique Strauss-Kahn, qui est arrivé ce matin à la caserne de gendarmerie de Lille pour être entendu dans le cadre de l'affaire du Carlton, a été placé en garde à vue, selon BFM-TV."
? please: what does it mean to have been placed 'en garde à vue' ?
Thks!

In English you'd usually say "has been taken into custody"-- it basically means he hasn't been put in prison as such, but he is temporarily in the care of the police/gendarmerie.
Had a sneaking suspicion as much, but could not credit my suspicion! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. And its the French police this time! Looks like 'L'affair(e?) Sofitel' occurred in the nick of time for the Socialists. Imagine if he had been in Hollande's shoes!
Thnks Neil.
A much belated la bonne année to you and your (our) site!
