I have been reading Francis Jammes' poem Clara d'Ellébeuse, and I keep being baffled by

 

Elle n'est peut-être pas encore morte
— ou peut-être que nous l'étions tous deux

 

Is he really saying what he seems to be saying - or maybe we were both dead - or am I missing something subtle?

No, that's what he's saying, no doubt. Poets are allowed to get away with all sorts of nonsense.

Agreed, but this seems very French nonsense. I can't imagine an English-speaking poet saying the same thing.
