apprendre v. enseigner

i just came across this sentence: 

Avec ces poupées, on apprend aux filles qu’elles doivent faire attention à leur apparence, à leurs vêtements.

it's confusing to use apprendre instead of ensigner.  i hope someone can explain when to use one and not the other.  it would b easier for me to just use enseigner all the time when i mean "to teach"
