There are apparently two plural forms: aïeux and aïeul(e)s. Which is which?

It is slightly complicated!

As I understand it now!

 

un aïeul = grandfather  ,great grandfather or ancestor

une aïeule = grandmother

 

des aïeux = ancestors (applies regardless of gender but is a masculine noun)

des aïeuls =grandfathers  ,great grandfathers (not ancestors)

des aïeules =grandmothers or ancestors
