Bateau ou Barque

What is the distinction between these words. I'm going to travel in a motor boat (Midi canal) that sleeps 8 people. Is it a barque or a bateau?

    Hi Jim,

    Une "barque" is a very small fishing boat. You can't really sleep in that and it's only for up to 3 people.

    Un "bateau" is a boat, no matter what its size is.

      Jim, could it perhaps be a "péniche" ? A péniche is a barge, houseboat or canal boat.
