quick question: use of reflexive when describing an object

Hi,

I'm just curious about why the reflexive was used

mon professeur a dit que la première année s'est plutôt nulle

why can't it just be "est"...?

what function does the use of the reflexive serve?

it's not the good writing

"mon professeur a dit que la première année s'est plutôt nulle"

the good writing is

"mon professeur a dit que la première année c'est plutôt nulle"

so it is not a reflexive form.

"c' " is the repeating of "la première année" like  the "it" in English = "the first year, it is nothing"
