I can make no sense of the word "puce". Here how it is used in this sentence,"...Sauf le marche aux puce peut-etre. (with a ^ over the e in etre) Can someone please translate this in English?

"puce" means "flea" and so "marché aux puces" translates as "flea market".
Perhaps you tried "marche aux puce" in the online translation instead of "marché aux puces" ? That only gives you gibberish"
So your sentence should read "Sauf le marché aux puces peut-etre" which means "except the flea market ,maybe."
By the way "ma puce" is also a term of endearment worth knowing.
In another context, it can also be a (micro)chip. And we also have the colour puce, same as in English. :-)
Thank you George, now this makes sense. I think it too was the way I typed it, without being able to put the dicritical marks on "marche" and leaving off the s on puces. "ma puce", I did see in the dictionary ma sweetheart.
