Do you hear this instead of "comprendre?"  If so, is it only informal (as it sounds)?

Hi Alan -- Yes, it's a reasonably common, informal way of saying "understand", "get it". You'll find it particularly in the expression "pige que dalle!", which is a pejorative way of saying that somebody is not intelligent enough to understand something (cf expressions in English such as "the light's on but there's nobody home").
