My understanding is that the preposition "en" is usually not followed by an article.

Je voyage en train.  C'est sa table en bois.  Ils sont en hiver.

In what cases does an article follow "en"?  For example, I just read the sentence "Nous croyons en la démocratie."

Hello.

I think  there is no rule about "en + article". It's only some expressions.

I know :

"péril en la demeure"

"expert en la matière"

"croire en XX ..." and XX is always "la" or  l'  : croire en l'avenir, croire en la chance

Thank you, Chantal.

More generally you can use "en" after some verbs:

1/

- croire en la chance/ en Dieu/ en la bonne étoile

- mise en oeuvre

or before:

- en appeler à la solidarité

2/ it can define what something is made of:

une table en bois: a wooden table

un évier en émail: enamel sink

3/ can specify the location or time:

en hiver/ en amérique

4/ before gerunds

en riant/ en pleurant / en partant/

5/ how an action is carried out:

en deux mots/ en toute hâte

6/ the result of an action:

être changé en (une) citrouille

éclater en sanglots

and so more...!
