Hi,

I have an old sign that originally came from somewhere in the South of France bearing the single word "Aéu". Therefore, there is no context to suggest how it should be used. It could be Occitan or Old French. I have had one suggestion that it could be a rare conjugation of aéré (or aérer)- meaning "to air out" (ie., as a Command).

Any help would be appreciated.

Michael -- I know very little about Occitan, but I don't think there's a -u verb ending.

Catalan actually does have an (imperative) ending -u, although I'm not sure that "Aéu" is an actual verb of Catalan.

Unfortunately, the "aérer" idea isn't plausible.

Could it be an abbreviation or name?
I hadn't thought of Catalan. Thanks.

I suppose it could be a name. Any thoughts on the etymology - "AEW" was Anglo-Saxon for "Wife" (ie., "Aewe" = "Ewe" = female sheep).
